A wholistic view of biofilm management

A wholistic view of biofilm management

Jennifer Hurlow and colleagues recently wrote in Advances in Wound Care an excellent overview of the current understanding of biofilms and their management. I particularly enjoyed the section on “take-home messages” where the following statement was made … “Addressing biofilm requires management of host and environmental factors that led to their development as well as wound cleansing, debridement or antimicrobial use.” This wholistic view of reasons for an individual’s wound chronicity is a timely reminder that factors such as vascular supply, blood sugar control, adequate nutrition, minimizing oedema and so on, must be concurrent considerations when planning biofilm based wound interventions.
