Inflammatory hypergranulation
Inflammatory hypergranulation … It is not unusual to encounter a wound which has become stalled in its healing due to hypergranulation or “proud flesh”. If you can rule out malignancy and foreign bodies as reason for causation, then inflammation (covert infection) and/or local hypoxia can be culprits. Topical agents often mentioned by clinicians for these lesions include copper sulphate, silver nitrate, antimicrobials (eg. iodine, silver, polyhexanide, honey), DACC dressings, corticosteroids, collagen products, hypertonic saline and you probably know of a few others. Whatever your poison or potion, the application of gentle compression over the site often proves a beneficial adjunct in the repair of these wounds.
